Going To Sweden? Include Gotland In Your Plan

Plan to visit Gotland for some lazy days, or discover the beautiful nature around this rocky island. The sea stacks are numerous and the beaches are many. The island is 125 km long (77.7 mi) long and 52 km (32.3 mi) wide, so I recommend to go by car. Whether you are an active traveller or want relaxation, this island offers the perfect blend for you.

Visby

Start your journey in Visby, a stunning coastal town surrounded by a gigantic medieval city wall. Here, fine dining meets coastal vibes and there are numerous of restaurants and bars. Nightlife is great too, especially in July when it can be very crowded. Visby is a UNESCO World Heritage site, reknowed for its beautiful rose gardens and historic ruins.

Just a short drive from Visby, about 10 minutes, you’ll find the Lummelunda Cave which is one of the longest caves in Sweden (4.5 km/2.8 mi). This fascinating cave system with beautiful formations and underground waters was discovered by three teenagers during 1940s–50s. Take a guided tour and get the full history. The cave is easy to walk and a popular destination for families with kids. There is also a café and restaurant conveniently located next to the cave.

Fårö

Famous rock formation in Old Harbour “Hunden” (English: The Dog).

Don’t miss a trip to Fårö, an island located just north of Gotland, easily reached by a short road ferry ride. The nature is amazing and here you will find the best rock formations. It’s a paradise for nature lovers! Don’t miss the famous creperie Crêperie Tati!🚗Famous director Ingmar Bergman owned a house on the island, and the museum Bergman Center is a tribute to his films and deep passion for Fårö.

How To Get There

There are three ways to travel to Gotland, it all depends on your type of travel preferences.

1. The most common way is by FERRY. Mainly because many go by car and it is the cheapest way too. The ride is about three hours and I recommend to go with Destination Gotland from Nynäshamn (about one hour south of Stockholm).

2. You can also chose to go BY AIR to Gotland. Flights are available from several cities in Sweden. Bromma Airport about 15 minutes from central Stockholm is a convenient way. The flight time can be as short as 30 minutes. The airport is about 15 minutes from Visby by taxi.

3. A new way to go is by CRUISE from central Stockholm. This is a nice way to enjoy the views of Stockholm archipelago, and get one day in Visby before heading back to Stockholm. Checkout Birka Gotland to find out more about the cruises and offerings.
